So this Adblock campaign...

Posted by CallumBowen - August 28th, 2013

" ERMAGERD YOU GUYS!!! WE NEED TO GET RID OF ADVERTS BECAUSE I AM IMPATIENT AND I DONT WANT TO WAIT 5 SECONDS TO WATCH SOMEONE PLAYING VIDEOGAMES!!!"

Get AdCock

If you support this Ad block campaign, you are stupid. They just want your money...to create adverts!!

oh the irony...

Whether you like or not, most websites such as Youtube and Facebook need advertisements to keep their site up and running otherwise their revenues will decrease and websites will have to think of something else to get money or will shut down D:

I get paid by Google because I run adverts on my videos. I get paid for something I like doing!! Clicking the skip button is not only helping youtube but the creative individuals like us newgrounders to keep going and creating awesome content!!

Who is funding TV channels and radio stations? Oh that's right adverts!!! That's why they have them otherwise they wont exist!! Yet people don't give a shit about commercials but ads on the internet *GAAAASP* IT'S A BIG DEAL!!!

Newgrounds uses the support system and it is a great way for removing adverts and contributing to the site at the same time! I do not care if it is $25 because this website deserves any donations for its content that is different than anywhere else. so if you have not done this yet! DO IT NOW! Newgrounds Supporter

TLDR; Dont get adblock and don't support these money grabbing assholes!!

Btw: adblock plus and GetAdblock are two different things so don't get confused!!

Comments

It's the end of the internets!!!1

if you ask me. this entire campaing is all just a scam. there is no way a few faggots will be able to remove ads from the internet

They already passed their supposed deadline. It is sickening too see how many people are stupid

i leave my adblock on when going through dangerous websites *COUGH*PORN*COUGH*, but for user focused stuff i leave it off

Those websites have pop ups which is does get blocked so thats understandable

So let me get this straight, this fucking douche bag need money so he can BUY ad space to promote adblocking...

I like to think hes got a dark past with adverts that ruined his childhood *cues dramatic music*

As someone who has owned, designed, and co-directed websites for over 5 years, I can say that there are better ways to earn funding for your website. I'm not saying ads are bad, no, they are okay in certain situations. Think about TV without ads, how would you find out about some of the products you like? But again, there are ads that interfere with the enjoyment of the sight.
Didn't mean to type a novel, but all the same with things you know and are passionate about, right?

Affiliate Programs come into my mind for funding a website which most sites use as well ( I dont know much about websites so I can't say I am right lol). You find adverts everywhere, Billboards, magazines, even in a urinal for god sake! ( I never got so hungry for a big mac when taking a huge piss lol) But no one complains about those! So I don't get why people get PMS when they see a advert on the internet. If the so called advert has a virus or something similar, your browser or anti virus software would have picked up something suspicious before you even clicked it! You're right about needing adverts to sell products otherwise no one will know. The Adblock guys want your money to place adverts on billboards about adblock. at least adblock plus is just.....there lol

I think I'll download adblock to block adblock's ads

Then you need adblock adblocker which blocks adverts from adblock which blocks adverts. We must go deeper.

man. if the whole world has adblock, how will website support it self????
So far I don't like adblock. I could be ignorant or naive, but like.

WWW1 (World Wide Web War 1)

@Remorph My suggestion to not using unobtrusive adverts is to get users to fund their internet usage directly.

I dub my creative solution "Internet Tax".

I've had Adblocker long before this, and I will have it long after this. But a kickstarter for this is just plain stupid -_-

if you really care about not supporting adblock then remove it from your computer

I know.. I hear ya. Two other NG members have made light of the situation, and I'm with ya. I asked Tom about a lifetime Supporter Upgrade option, but he hasn't responded...

That's a cool idea. I bought mine last year and I still have no ads but I don't know how long it will last.

Yeah I hear ya man, but ads that interfere with your use of the website (IE the ones that look like false links to your "downloads" or others).

If websites use those adverts, you came to the wrong neighborhood lol

I suggested opening up the "recently bought" thingy, so you could at least scan back, to see when you bought it. Even a shit fix, is still a fix. I still kinda wish buy the upgrade would squash the cookies.... visual ads are gone, but they're still tracking ya. Oh well.

Yeah, I don't think people realize it, but they're hurting the people who make the games and videos when they use adblock. I like the whole free software/internet movement, and they've made some amazing programs like Blender, but this isn't a communist society. We all still have to pay for food...

I like to support my favorite entertainers on the Internet.
I would Donate to my favorite ones if I had a freaking credit card I could use for that.
The least I can do is watch those fucking ads (well, I skip them but... I guess it still counts... right?).
And sometimes even click on the ads of sites like Webcomic artists and such. I don't like the idea of Adblock for some stuff. Now a campaign for AdBlock? Screw that!
Sure, some guys who watch a lot of pr0n and stuff on sites that are not really secure (thing I never do btw, leaves too much evidence on your computer) may use Adblock for those pop-ups, but at least if you go on a site you like or on a channel you like, turn it off... But I guess people don't understand that. Campaign reached 45000$ already... wtf...

People at Adblock are making a selfish move on their part. and anyone who uses adblock because they are impatient I call "Selfish"

but what about BBC? 0_0

your parents pays a TV license every year, part of that money goes to the BBC.

I, like Hyrus here, use adblock because I'm not a fool. If you buy something from an ad, that means you didn't already have it, and thus didn't need it (And don't try to tell me ads raise awareness. Most of the time they don't. That is what blogs, word of mouth or the news is for). When I need a product or service, I seek it out, which additionally lets me do my own research to find the better product.

By generating profit simply because I started watching, lets say, a youtube video, I'm not supporting them for their work, I'm supporting them for finding a way to funnel me to their content. If I want to support someone's work, I would buy it (if it is that kind of thing) or donate. The ad supported system is vicious, and does not foster good design, art, or content. It rewards anyone who can trick someone into consuming said ad, regardless of the original content. So, if you have a youtube video that is a thumbnail of some woman's boobs, with a title like 'I can't believe she did that!,' you'll generate hits, and thus money, and climb the ladder, without actually providing valuable content.

Imagine if people were promoting/funding content based on that material's merit? The net quality of material, or at least net quality of highly visible material would go up, benefiting everyone. Or maybe if ads were displayed after the content, so that someone could consciously chose to support the artist if they liked the work.

Years ago I got sick of advertisements not only disrupting my browsing, but actively trying to TRICK me into clicking on them. Things like making the sides of a website a huge click-space because research showed users clicked there in order to re-focus their browser or pop up ads that subject you to their content, distracting you from your work/play. I discovered Adblock shortly after it came out and have been using it ever since. Eventually Adblock will be corrupted, and I'll move on to the next plugin that does the job.

So no, I'm not impatient, I just see no reason why I am REQUIRED to subject myself to garbage simply to support something that I haven't even been able to review yet. I have videos on youtube, and I have monitization enabled. And I don't give a shit that I've only made $0.51 because people are blocking ads. I didn't put up my tutorial video to make money. If I did, I'd have submitted it to a paywall website.

My two favorite misconceptions about ad-funded revenue:

1: "These advertisements don't make money based on your viewing them. The money is made when someone clicks on these advertisements"
NOPE. Exposures pay. Clicks pay more, but the advertising pay rate is based on number of exposures. If you're under the impression that using ablocker doesnt hurt anything because you wouldn't click on ads anyways, you're straight up wrong.

2: "Ads track and sell my info"
NOPE. Your info has already been tracked and sold by means that aren't prevented by adblockers. The ads you see are usually based on this collected data, and just because you don't see ads doesn't mean that your information is safe.

There are some good instances to use adblockersand people are going to use them regardles of what anybody says, but there's no way around the fact that they do hurt the revenue that funds websites that run on ads, and that's a plain FACT. Funding alternatives will appear, at the moment there arent any clearly viable options, but everything is still working itself out.
In the meantime, justify your use of Adblockers if you feel that you must, but don't insult everyone's intelligence (including your own) by using nonsense bullshit arguments like the ones above.

^This

You know, its really true. companies like that just want your money! I completely agree with this!

So should I tell my friend that the Ad blocker is evil or what?
